These photographs are about my wife Viviane. We met on April 9, 1975 and we hit it off from the start. I began photographing her 27 years ago when we were dating.

Viviane Almost every time we would go out, to a restaurant, to a movie, hiking or bicycling, I would photograph her, and I am still photographing her today. Viviane is a gentle soul and would go out of her way not to hurt any one's feelings. If Viviane had a bad day at work, when she got home she would start reading a book and after a while she would become serene. I have noticed her on several occasions become transformed by reading a book.

Another way in which Viviane dealt with hectic work days was gardening, that was her second ablution. I have seen her go straight to the garden in her best clothes. She did it many times and not once did she ever dirty her clothing. One day while she was shoveling some earth, making room for new plants, a toad mysteriously appeared out of nowhere. I didn't understand it at all and thought perhaps this was the good omen of earthly fecundity. In the beginning of our relationship Viviane would walk alongside me as I was taking pictures. As time progressed she would walk ahead of me while I was taking pictures and I started photographing her from the back. As the years rolled on I photographed her from the back in National Parks and Monuments, at the beach, on forest trails and city streets. I could probably put together a show based solely of Viviane from the back, hmmm.
